BERLIN, GERMANY. The global airport industry is undergoing significant change. Due to a number of factors such as growing air traffic demand, regulatory changes, changing passenger expectations and cost pressure, airports are starting to adapt. Airports are changing the way they operate, make decisions and the technologies they invest in. In this interview series, Safegate Group interviews leading experts about what they see are key challenges facing the airport industry and how they plan to meet them. In the first interview of this series, Safegate’s Claudio Pellegata talks to Luz Teichler, an experienced project manager at AAC Aviation & Airport Consult GmbH based in Germany. New ways to increase airside traffic efficiency and meet increasing, more complex traffic situations
Airport airside traffic automation is increasingly gaining grounds with Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) and Airport Operators around the world. Tier one and mid-size airports face increasing and more complex traffic demands. Multifaceted movement traffic conditions pose new, higher demands on ATCOs, airport planning and minute-to-minute operational personnel.
Today’s Airports contain a complex network of stakeholders. Often these stakeholders have efficient management and communication strategies within their respective departments. However, inefficiencies that hamper productivity and performance can be created when these stakeholders interface with other departments and external organisations. If a holistic approach is to be implemented, a philosophy of One Airport – One Process needs to be adopted.

Airfield lighting (also known as airfield ground lighting) has come a long way since its beginnings in the 1940s during the rigors of war-time. Considering the increasing demands on the aviation industry today, what would pilots, airports and passengers have done had they been limited to flying only during daylight? Air traffic demand is rising and will double within 15 years, just as it has done since the 1970s. Airfield lighting has played a significant part in enabling the growth of the aviation industry that has revolutionized how we travel, work and enjoy our leisure time.
How do you increase safety and situational awareness across operational borders at your airport? What do you do to reduce Air Traffic Control (ATC) workload and minimize the risk of human error caused by poor surveillance coverage in and around the gate and apron areas? Do you utilize existing data and technology at the gate to provide surveillance gap filler functionality to the airport ATC surveillance system? Many of today’s airports were constructed and put into operation during the 1960s and 1970s, in a period when jet aircraft were only just being introduced and air travel was booming. The usual way to increase capacity is to look into the construction of additional infrastructure. However, quite often the existing infrastructure is used in an inefficient way and contains hidden and unused capacity. Airports can increase capacity and reduce aircraft fuel burn through the efficient use of airfield ground lighting and advanced visual docking guidance systems.
