Since the early days of aviation, air traffic controllers (ATCO) have suffered from a high number of screens, mimic panels and multiple input devices. The controller is forced to create a mental image of the total situation on the airfield and take appropriate action based on this mental image. With thousands of flights each day this is a very challenging task and the controller will not always be able to make the most optimal decision.
The tower is the brain of any airport. It’s at the centre of the action, with air traffic controllers keeping an eye on each and every aircraft movement across the airfield and local aerodrome. In the lead up to World ATM Congress in Madrid, the biggest exhibition in Europe for ATC, Safegate Group CEO, Per-Olof Hammarlund, describes Safegate’s long-held dream to be a part of the tower operations.
Abu Dhabi International Airport is undertaking one of its most ambitious expansion projects, where ADB Group has been selected as the main contractor. This partnership will enable the airport to be innovative, dynamic and improve traveler experience while maintaining world-class standards of airside safety and compliance at its existing terminals to create additional capacity for traffic growth. Using ADB’s SmartExpansion Path* methodology, the airfield will be redesigned after a survey of the existing airside infrastructure. ADB will also optimize the airport’s AGL infrastructure including lighting, power, control, and surface guidance systems.
Dense fog and low visibilty has challenged the second largest civil airport in Pakistan for years. To solve the problem, Safegate Group and Lahore Allama Iqbal International Airport work together in an Airport Traffic Expansion project in order to weather proof the airport. The first phase of the project was completed in November before time shedule. We went Lahore to ask representatives from the airport, the Civil Aviation and the Safegate team about what the project means to the airport, the city and the passengers. The Congress, held on March 8-10, is one of the most important air traffic management events of the year and we’re looking forward to seeing you there! AviBit joined Safegate Group in 2009 and is a leading provider of next generation software applications for efficient ATC solutions, and also integration of Air Traffic Control systems.
The 4th Africa Airport Expansion Summit is just around the corner. During two days in February, 11-12, government officials, investors, civil aviation authorities and airport management groups will gather in Ghana (Accra) to meet with consultants, architects, construction companies, equipment providers and service groups, in order to better explore the African market and support project development in the area.
In June this year Safegate Group and Lahore Allama Iqbal International Airport signed a contract to work together towards weather proofing the airport in only 12 months. The objective is being able to land aircraft in low visibility before the winter, and by May 2016 to handle 25 movements per hour. A project as complex as this can easily take 5 years to implement. To to do it in only 12 months’ time is unheard of. Until now! We spoke with Jesper Svensson, General Manager SafePerformance for Safegate Group about how this is possible.
Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif inspected and inaugurated the latest landing system installed on the runway that will enables flights landing at even 50 metre visibility. The first step of the airport expansion project has been completed in a record period of time and would not only ensure safe landing of planes in foggy weather and low visibility but also help save time for the airport, airlines and passengers.
