Singapore Changi Airport has two runways with a complex taxiway system connecting to three passenger terminals and one cargo terminal. The airport operates a wide variety of aircraft with approximately 735 movements a day. In 2012 the airport had 51.2 million passengers and over 320,000 aircraft movements. The new runway’s edge lighting falls squarely under the environmental category of the triple bottom line. The airport authority jumped at the chance to install LED high-intensity runway edge lights shortly after the FAA approved them last spring – even though the LEDs did not qualify for Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funding and runway construction was already nearly complete at the time.
