IATA projects a 5.1% growth in passenger numbers across the region where nearly 300 million passengers will travel to and from African destinations and as a result, airport development projects today are mushrooming across the continent. ADDIS ABABA. Ethiopia not only plays a strategic role for Africa’s aviation sector, but because of its location, it serves as a cross road between Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. Addis Ababa Bole Airport is important to Ethiopia’s industry sector, mainly for the export of perishable goods, for which Bole Airport has improved its cargo infrastructure, and also increasingly for tourism. Both are main pillars for the fast growing economy of Ethiopia. Ethiopia has big plans for its airports. And, it is no secret that the land-locked Ethiopia has big plans to turn itself into Africa’s chief aviation hub.
Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) chose ADB SAFEGATE to upgrade the Tamale Airport with efficient CAT II LED airfield ground lighting (AGL). The airport was in dire need of an upgrade as the existing narrow runway did not support night operations. The upgrade will help accelerate growth and development of the region, setting it up as an economic hub.

The recently-commissioned Victoria Falls International Airport is among the three primary airports in Southern Africa that connects air travelers to Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The airport chose ADB SAFEGATE for its expertise in airfield lighting turnkey projects to upgrade to a CAT II airfield, which can support long haul flights in all-weather conditions. The airport can now land larger international aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus A330 and weekly passenger arrivals are forecast to rise by 40 percent. Continue reading
