Transforming Abu Dhabi Zayed International: A New Chapter in Airport Excellence

From June to September 2024, Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport (AUH) initiated a significant project to introduce digital transformation technology, aiming to boost its safety, efficiency, and sustainability.

A key achievement occurred on September 23rd, with Flight EY694, signaling the completion of the North Runway Rehabilitation project, a week ahead of schedule. As part of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA)’s “Building Better Airports” program, this task focused on enhancing the runway’s structural integrity and efficiency utilizing modern construction methods that also adhere to sustainability standards.

A vital element of this effort was implementing Airside 4.0® technology, moving past traditional lighting. By integrating smart technology across its operations, AUH ensured its runway and taxiway lights do more than illuminate—they communicate with other system elements for adjustments in real-time based on changing conditions and operational needs.

The project, carried out within a tight 90-day window with ADB SAFEGATE and Western Bainoona Group, involved:

  • Decommissioning existing AGL (Airfield Ground Lighting)
  • Installation and commissioning of AXON lights for runway edge, centerline, touchdown zone, runway end, threshold, and wing bars
  • Installation and commissioning of LED PAPIs
  • Installation and commissioning of CRE and LINC 360 controllers
  • Civil works related to AGL manholes, adjusted to the new asphalt level

To facilitate these upgrades, AUH’s northern runway (13L/31R) was closed for 90 days for refurbishment. During this period, operations moved exclusively to the Southern Runway (13R/31L), preserving the airport’s Low Visibility Operations (LVO) capabilities. The ASMGCS Level 4 “Follow the Greens (FTG)” system also remained fully functional. Before the refurbishment began, the Southern Runway (31L/13R) was briefly closed for one week for essential maintenance, preparing it for the increased activity during the closure of the north runway.

Congratulations to Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport and everyone involved in this project!
