VIDEO. Perth Airport is a major transit hub that operates 24/7. The airport handles nearly 14 million passengers and 130,000 aircraft movements every year. It is one of the most isolated international airports in the world. Perth can have up to 65 forecasted low visibility days per year. in the past low visibility conditions have led to aircraft diversions. The nearest alternative airports are a minimum of two flying hours away. Airline diversion cost including fuel, transport & accommodation can reach over half a million dollars per diversion. The solution was to upgrade Perth´s main runway from CAT-I to CAT-III rating.
ADB SAFEGATE was selected as the turn-key integrated system provider. 3,800 intelligent LED light fittings were installed along with cabling and control systems. The project was delivered over the course of two years. Aircraft can now land in low visibility conditions, to a distance of 50m down from 800m. Aircraft won´t need to carry as much additional fuel. ADB SAFEGATE was capable of completing the full project in-house. The upgrade enables direct flights from the UK – A first for Australia. A significant reduction of diversions is expected. Passengers, the airport, airlines and the environment all benefit. ADB SAFEGATE is committed to the challenge of helping airports operate more safely, efficiently, sustainable.
