Stephen O'Flynn
Global ATM Advisor
My experience covers the complete range of Air Traffic Control Services, both as an Air Traffic Controller and as an expert in providing strategic and implementation support, concept development, system specification, safety and security analysis on current and developing ATM technologies and applications. The aviation industry, and Air Traffic Control, has always provided me with a satisfaction of working to achieve a safe environment. We all travel and we all want to get home safely, and I think this business is one where we look to find business efficiencies while at the same time ensuring safety.
I’m extremely interested in technology both in ATM and in my personal life. Historically we have mostly created technical ‘solutions’ to solve ‘problems’ and although that continues, we are also more and more creating technical wonders for which we don’t yet have a problem to solve, while confident it will find a valid use. This for me is a game changer in our evolution – it’s not only about ‘need’ anymore but also about what is purely possible.
The achievement in my professional life that I am most proud of is receiving an RTCA award in 2011 for contributions to the FAA and Airport technology. After nearly 10 years in a small team driving joint European and FAA standards for ADS-B technology it was a real honour to be given that award.
Balancing time pressures of today with demanding quality standards requires presence of mind but most of all, good relationships. No delivered product is ever perfect; however we should always strive for excellence.
